Maine School libraries are essential, and MASL strives to recognize exceptional programs made possible by the dedicated work of library support staff, library media specialists, and supportive administrators. Each year MASL accepts nominations for three awards that celebrate the powerful impact of effective school library programs in transforming learning and fostering community growth. The three awards are: the Walter J. Taranko School Librarian Award, the MASL Library Support Staff Award, and the MASL Administrator Award. The deadline to digitally submit nominations is February 15th each year.
The Walter J Taranko Award (WJT Award) is given in recognition of excellence in school library work within the State of Maine. It is awarded annually to a school librarian (071 certified) who embodies his traits: collaboration, advocacy, outreach, and mentoring. Walter valued the benefits of membership in professional organizations and was a strong supporter of MASL and MEMA before it. The award includes a personalized plaque and cash award to the school library of the winner.
Instituted in 2013 to highlight the often unsung work of support staff in Maine's school libraries, the MASL Library Support Staff Award is intended to honor Educational Technicians who have made a significant contribution to their local school library media program and/or demonstrated commitment to those efforts at the state level. The award includes a personalized plaque and a cash award to the school library of the winner.
Like MASL's other awards, the Administrator Award was instituted to recognize excellence in support of library programs in Maine schools. This award illuminates the contributions of school administrators to the improvement of learning for all school community members through the school library program. The MASL Administrator Award also seeks to encourage administrators throughout Maine to acknowledge the vital nature of school library programs and staff. The award includes a personalized plaque and a cash award to the school library of the winner.
Award nominations are due February 15th each year.
